Work

…or more specifically, ceasing to work. I’m reading Why Guys Need God by Mike Erre right now, and he’s talking about how work is not the result of the Fall, that work is not punishment but that we were always intended to work. His position is that God worked in creation and that our working is a part of our being created in the image of God, which got me thinking…

What does it mean to rest? This may seem like an odd question when reading about work being a part of our very nature, but I don’t have a problem working. I work at work, and when I come home, I work some more. I enjoy work. I enjoy what I do, and I enjoy the projects that I do on the side. My hope is that those side projects will eventually become profitable, and I enjoy the work that it takes to make them so. I especially enjoy the creative aspects of these projects, but when God rested, he rested from creating.

I guess what I’m really asking is, what does it mean to shabbat, to rest, to take a Sabbath. Observing the Sabbath (or at least a Sabbath) was a command that was never rescinded in the New Testament. It’s a commandment that I’m not very good at following. But even if I was good at it, what does it even mean to take a Sabbath? Is it to rest not only from day-to-day work but to rest even from being creative? Woodworking, painting, and building hot rods are all thoroughly enjoyable activities for many, but they are also a form of work? Should we rest even from these on our Sabbath?

I have no good answers on this, only questions.

Hey Will — I enjoyed reading your reflective thoughts. It is like a recap from the meeting last night and it is good to see you chewing on some of the things that were discussed. I like how you ask questions. Speaking of questions — what does it mean to find our rest in Him?

Wow. Couple of things. First of all, I’ve been thinking a lot about sabbath lately, too. Apparently, it’s been in the forefront of people’s brains. I’ll be sure to share any insight if I find some.

Also, your blogroll seems a little heavily stacked with male bloggers. What’s up with that? Huh, huh? :)

Hey Jeff, actually, my questions last night came after the post. I was reading the book yesterday morning when I started thinking about the Sabbath. The Sabbath is something that has been brought to my attention quite a bit lately. I think it might be God trying to get my attention.

As for how we find our rest in God, well that would take at least a post to discuss, if not a book.

Hey there Hyla, good insights are always appreciated.

As for the blogroll, the male lean to it has to do with two things. First, I just haven’t had the chance to update it in a while. I need to add Heather and Lisa on there (although there’s at least one more dude to go up there as well.)

But second, it has a lot to do with the world I live/lived in. I do a lot of tech stuff, and most of the folks that I know in the tech world are guys. Of the few who aren’t, I don’t know of any with blogs.

I also don’t think I realized you had a blog. I think I may have been to it once or twice, but it didn’t really stick in my head. You’ll be in my blogroll shortly!
